Nguyễn Phú Trọng (阮富仲) has been elected the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), during the 13th National Party Congress being held in Hanoi.
It will be his third term as the country’s most powerful political figure. He was first elected to the position in 2011, and re-elected in 2016.
The members of the politburo and the secretariat are also announced. 10 out of 18 politburo members are new to the highest party body.

There are two PCC members with the same name Nguyễn Văn Hùng (阮文雄). One is the vice chairman of the PCC’s inspection commission, while the other is the deputy minister of culture, sports and tourism.
General secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng, born in 1944, is also the oldest one among the PCC members. The youngest member is Mùa A Vảng (梅阿往), born in 1983.
